The slope formula can be calculated using one of the following formula: one if you know the value for the two point of the line, (x1,y1) (x2,y2).
If you know the two points of the line you can calculate the slope using the following formula:
$$Slope = (y2-y1)/ (x2-x1)$$
$$(x1,y1) = "First Point Value"$$
$$(x2,y2) = "Secondo Point Value"$$
It is an equality which has at least one unknown value that must be cleared,
these unknowns values are represented by letters.
It is a representation of a rule or a general principle using letters. (Algebra, A. Baldor)
When describing formulas in plural, it is also valid to say "formulae".
